Although with so much choice, it can be difficult to choose the right product for your exact needs. So here is a very small guide to help you through it.
The first thing you need to do is figure out what type of lamp you are using, and find the ballast that is compatible with that lamp type. The most common types are F45T5, F32T8 and F40T12. However it isn't uncommon that you might require something different, so it is important to make sure of this early on. Next you need to decide which start method is right for you. Areas where lights are left running for long periods of time would benefit from an instant start ballast. However lamps that are switched on and off regularly would be best suited with a programmed start ballast, which will give the lamps a longer life time. The last thing is ballast factor, which controls the level of light output on a lamp. In areas and rooms that don't need as much light, a ballast factor lower than 0.77 will be more efficient. For large open areas such as warehouses or industrial buildings, where you need as much light as possible, a ballast factor above 1.1 is ideal. Anything between 0.77 and 1.1 is considered normal levels.
